Building Resilient Communities: $2,500 Mental Health Impact Scholarship

This scholarship aims to support undergraduates and graduates from Caribbean or Latino backgrounds who are committed to improving mental health awareness, access, and services within their communities. By providing financial assistance, we seek to empower students who are passionate about creating a positive impact in the mental health field, particularly for underserved populations.


Application Process

  • Application Form: Complete the online scholarship application form.
  • Personal Statement: Submit a personal statement (500-750 words) that outlines:

                          - Your background and academic achievements.

                          - Your passion for mental health advocacy or work.

                          - The specific mental health issues you aim to address within your community and how you   

                             plan to make an impact.

                          - How receiving this scholarship will help you achieve your academic and career goals.

  • Project Proposal (Optional but Strongly Encouraged): If applicable, include a brief proposal for a mental health initiative you would like to implement in your community, detailing the goals, target audience, and potential impact.
  • Letters of Recommendation: Provide two letters of recommendation from individuals who can speak to your academic abilities, commitment to mental health advocacy, and character. One letter should be from a teacher, mentor, or supervisor in a relevant field (e.g., mental health, community service).
  • Academic Transcripts: Submit official academic transcripts from your current or most recent educational institution.
  • Proof of Enrollment: Provide evidence of enrollment or acceptance into an accredited undergraduate or graduate program.
  • Financial Documents: Submit documentation demonstrating financial need, such as a copy of the most recent tax return, FAFSA report, or financial aid award letter.


Selection Criteria

Applications will be evaluated based on the following:

  1. Passion for Mental Health: Demonstrated commitment to mental health awareness and advocacy, particularly within the Caribbean or Latino communities.
  2. Academic Excellence: Demonstrated by GPA, coursework, and academic achievements.
  3. Leadership and Community Involvement: Active participation in community service, particularly in mental health initiatives or related activities.
  4. Personal Statement: Quality, clarity, and relevance of the personal statement in relation to the applicant's goals in mental health advocacy.
  5. Letters of Recommendation: Strength and relevance of recommendations in highlighting the applicant’s character, leadership, and community impact potential.
  6. Financial Need: Demonstrated need for financial assistance.


Terms and Conditions

  1. Use of Funds: Scholarship funds must be used for educational purposes, including but not limited to tuition, books, or other academic expenses.
  2. Maintaining Eligibility: Recipients must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 and provide proof of continued enrollment in an undergraduate program.
  3. Reporting Requirements: Recipients may be required to submit periodic reports on their academic progress and any mental health-related community projects they undertake.
  4. Community Engagement: Recipients are encouraged to continue or expand their involvement in mental health initiatives and may be asked to share their experiences or progress as part of the scholarship program's impact evaluation.

Eligibility Criteria

To be considered for the scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Background: Must be of Caribbean or Latino descent.
  • Academic Status: Must be currently enrolled or accepted into an accredited undergraduate program.
  • Field of Interest: Must have a demonstrated interest in mental health, psychology, social work, public health, or a related field, or be involved in mental health initiatives within the community.
  • Academic Performance: Must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
  • Community Impact: Demonstrate involvement or plans to engage in community work focused on mental health awareness, advocacy, or services.
  • Financial Need: Demonstrate financial need through appropriate documentation.


Timeline

- Application Opens: 5/1/25

- Application Deadline: 7/30/25

- Review Period: 8/1/25 to 8/15/25

- Notification of Recipients: 8/20/25

- Disbursement of Funds: 8/30/25


Scholarship Award Details

- The scholarship award may be used for tuition, books, or other educational expenses related to the applicant’s academic program or mental health projects.

- Recipients may be eligible for additional support or mentorship in their mental health initiatives.
